Subj: [kl] operatic music lesson/Minor operatic disaster
Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 12:33:37 -0500

I believe there is a music lesson in "The Barber of
Seville". A production I once played in found a young
soprano from Juilliard who was also a very
accomplished flutist. So what d'you know but in the
middle of singing the entire opera she picked up a
flute and played the Chopin variations piece from
memory terrifically. Only one problem, in the show the
conductor forgot and cued the chorus to start the
following scene, so the somewhat puzzled audience saw
their lead singer pick up a flute and then hurredly
put it down again with a surprised look on her face.
That's opera folks! I remember the concertmaster from
the Toronto Symphony who was in on that gig going
"some mistakes you're glad aren't your own!"
