Aimee, I donated a copy of a quintet for clarinet and string quartet to
the Clarinet library by an African American composer. I forget the name
of the piece but it is the same composer who wrote the blues that goes
with the words "I hate to see, that evening sun go down." Mind you, he
did not make the arrangement of this particular blues tune for clarinet
and string quartet, just wrote the music for it. !!!! WILLIAM
CHRISTOPHER HANDY and the name of the work is HARLEM BLUES, it all came
back to me as I was writing.

A number of years ago Alan Balter contacted me and asked for a work by
an Africal American composer and I made a copy of the quintet and sent
it to him. He played it and was very positive about the arrangement.
But since I no longer have it, you will have to get copies made from the
Clarinet library.

Another work that comes to mind is the quintet for clarinet and string
quartet by a British composer of African descent (I think). Surely you
don't need to stick to African Americans, do you? Boy, my memory is
going sour. He is the composer with three names (like Alfred Lord
Tennyson, though that is not the guy I have in mind) and its very close
to the name of a poet. Of course, after I send this, I'll remember his
name.

The memory is the second thing to go.
