I just measured with a ruler and one half inch appears correct to me.

It is on the top of the tongue.

This allows one to take more mouthpiece into the mouth.

Instead of trying to pull the tongue back so that the tip contacts the tip
of the reed/mouthpiece you simply tongue farther back from the tip.

I assure you that with practice this portion of the tongue can be just as
sensative and fast as the tip.

In fact, the tongue itself does not move nearly as much using this method
which actually uses less motion and energy.

I used this method twenty five years ago and right now I am out of practice
and would not be able to show you what is really possible.

Last time I checked I can tongue sixteenth notes with stacatto at 120. I
need more practice to go any faster than this.

The reason this was taught to me is because I have a long tongue and it
helped me improve my articulation and was taught in conjunction with Keith's
embouchure as well.

I still practice with the tip also.

I feel I should be able to use both depending on the passage.
