That's a good question! Tongueing notes allows a wind musician to begin
each note crisply and clearly (and in case of staccato, to end a note
distinctly) and allows a set amount of air in the lungs to be used more
efficiently ie. play longer on one breath. It also distinguishes the
sound from slurring, so you have one more skill to add to your clarinet
'bag of tricks'.
