Bill,

We do manipulate the air using the tongue on the reed. We slice it, we dice
it...we stop it, we let it go.....
I do allow air to flow or not to flow by using the tongue on the tip of the
reed. Controlling the air flow is critical!!!

The "valve" analogy is a very good one.
