Subj: [kl] Introducing Tonguing
Date: Fri, 29 Nov 2002 17:37:57 -0500

Before I burnt out as a Jr Hi band director, I had a technique for teaching
tonguing that never failed. I would take an ordinary soda straw and have
the student blow through it. While they were blowing, I would tap my
finger on the outer end of the straw several times, thus shutting off the
air stream. The student obviously could feel what I was doing, and it was
easy to tell if the student followed my instructions to "keep
blowing". Then I would say, "Now you do the same thing on your end of the
straw with your tongue." Rarely was a second demonstration
necessary. Then all that remained was to talk about where to place the
tongue when you did the same thing with the clarinet.
