I don't think it is, Bill. If it were then you and the audience would always
be aware of a hissing sound, right? I don't hear this with good clarinet
players. I've sat within a foot or two of everywhere from fair to
world-class players and I've yet to hear an air hiss from a tongued reed
(and there are times when the tongue is held on the reed for a significant
amount of time).
