List,
It seems to me that the 'Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Carl
Maria von Weber' is one of great fun pieces of orchestral music. Sometimes
loud or soft, foot tapping or lyrical, I think it is a good piece, an
accessible piece, for a beginning fan of classical music. And it is simply
fun to say the name. In school, I was given the section with trills as an
exercise. The trills were not fun, but for curiosity's sake I checked a
recording out of the library and loved it. Later I played the Sonata in a
student recital, and found that enjoyable, too. This, and a couple of other
student recitals, marked the pinnacle of my clarinet playing. Now that I'm
taking it up again, my memories of Hindemith are good ones. (In fact I
recently ordered the Sonata; I have wondered what it would be like to revisit
it.)
