The Nashville (TN) station, WPLN, went through a phase where they would play
parts of works. I think there may have been an outcry from the listeners,
because they've, for the most part, abandoned it, playing full works, again.
On rare occasions -- usually on the hour going to NPR news, somebody didn't
calculate quite correctly and the end of something is snipped, but on the
whole, they really do a very good job. It's good that they do a decent job,
because they are the only classical station anywhere in the area. One minor
but irritating problem is that they are on the same frequency (FM90.3) as
the NPR station in North Alabama. When I go to one of the southern coutines
to work, the signal flips back and forth between the two stations, and on
the NPR feeds, they're about 2 seconds out of sync. Very confusing.

The primary announcers are Harry Fennell, Will Griffin, and Nina Cardona. (I
think that's how the last name is spelled.) They all seem to have a
well-rooted knowedge base. Occasionally they'll announce a Haydn symphony
and the engineer plays Rite of Spring, or some such, after which the
announcer says, "Somehow I don't think that was Haydn."

One thing I'm curious about is apparently they're retransmitting a satellite
feed of something called Music Through the Night. It's listed in their
schedule as (from Channel 24.) It's none of the regulars. It runs from 10p
to 5a. It may have been a costcutting measure.

We get a nice mix on the weekend of non-music programs: Car Talk, What D'ya
Know?, Fine Print, (books) Thistle & Shamrock, Wait, Wait Don't tell me,
Garrison Keiller, Schickele Mix, etc. We also get Bluegrass Breakdown,
which I think should be transferred to one of the s***kicker stations that
infest the area. BTW, someone asked about who (or what) was Schickele. A
while back, I stumbled on his website, and it's as funny as his music.
Found the link, and it's still active: http://www.schickele.com/ for anyone
who needs a laugh.

That's it for Middle Tennessee. <g>
