Don't worry about it, they are just having fun. There have been several
students that tried to get quick answers without ever learning a thing
about research.

However, I do agree with you to some degree. When I was going to college
we were told in high school you learn how to write a report. When
working for a bachelors degree you learn where the library is, how it
can be used and how to write a report. When working for your Masters
you learn the names and locations of the worlds most authoritative
reference works and you had better be writing your papers correctly by
now. When working for your Doctorate you do the same thing but you are
supposed to come up with something new for the world. But there is a
catch here. Sometimes, at this level, the info you are seeking may be
known to only a few people in obscure places on the planet or they may
be the only ones that know where the info can be located. Info, that so
few people have come across that it may not be written in any book that
is or was in even limited distribution, such as other doctoral
candidates papers that never got published but may exist maybe at
Oxford. I had a friend that came up against the very same problem and
after asking others instead of digging into the available printed
materials was able to prove that one of works attributed to Hayden was
not his work at all. She found the necessary evidence in the protected
archives in the dungeons of Oxford.

Sometimes it is just faster to ask.
