Funny, but I have had the opposite experience. Valentino has stopped making the larger pads but I had really good experiences with them.
I have a small supply of 17 mm plus Valentinos which I have hoarded. When restoring an old, sometimes beaten up bass clarinet, I use these as a pad of last resort, and they almost always do the trick.
For normal circumstances, I use white leather kid pads on bass. I do want to say, however, that I got some brown leather pads recently from Allied Supply, and they were among the best bass clarinet pads I have ever used. Very "supple", easy to seat, cover beautifully and as quiet as can be.
