I'm ADD. That is what got me through college and a 20 year music
career. ADD and ADHD people usually have above average intelligence and
are frequently able to over focus on whatever they are interested in.
Music was mine and it payed off. If we had only known back then maybe
with the medication I now take I could have gone even further. Who
knows how much of the intelligence gets wasted because of a lack ability
to focus when you really need it.

Your boy might benefit from ADHD if he gets interested in the clarinet
and it is a positive experience for him.

Are you familiar with CHADD?
