In reading this thread, I am attempting to remember (because I too was a
finger slammer!) the exercise David Neithamer gave ME to remedy that
horrible bedevilment when I first began studying with him. David?

(Yes, I still have to work at it, of course, but for some odd reason, I
cannot recall the specific exercise, since it WAS, after all, some years
ago, and it has, well, modified itself in my mind over the years - I
prefer to say it has mellowed, much as a fine wine! :-) )
