I thought the remark surely must be meant as humor, but I also thought it was
better to ask than to guess. I live in a multi-national Northern Virginia
neighborhood, near the Pentagon, just outside of Washington, D. C. My
husband works in a frequently-threatened, frequently-evacuated Federal
Government complex, two blocks from the White House. I could go on for many
off-topic pages of reasons why, like a lot of people who live around here, I
know it's dangerous to assume that someone who utters extremist-sounding,
anti-American remarks doesn't really mean anything by them. We're a mite
jumpy in this neighborhood.

However, I completely accept Tony's explanation and apology -- and, Patricia,
I like your sensible response much better than the smug, "Gotcha!" reaction
of one or two other people who seem over-eager to find fault with Tony and
who have made way too big a deal out of a minor incident, IMHO.
