HI Kelly,

I have encountered this problem for many years. There are a lot of teachers
out there who don't send me students anymore because of my attitude toward
equipment.

I have a box full of "toys" that I keep in my studio and I encourage my
students to take things home and try them out and then let me know how they
liked them at the next lesson when they return them. I also encourage them
to make the rounds of the local shops and try anything that the shop will
let them try. I never recommend one brand of anything over another because
every person is different and someone must have been successful with
whatever it is that's being sold or he wouldn't be selling it (within
reason).

I've been introduced to some very fine products and equipment this way and
my students are more sophisticated when they have to choose their own
equipment. They also enjoy the fun of the search and the reward of finding
something really useful to them without having to rely only on the teacher.
Diversity is a good thing.
