Actually, I have an old Pedler alto clarinet that a school was throwing away
that I use as a decoration on top of a shelf of CD's. I don't buy
instruments much off e-Bay except for "grandfather's clarinet" that I was
going to sell to one of my students to use for a marching instrument. The
other one I got was a Buffet alto clarinet for $200.00. The serial number
shows that it was made in the 30's but it plays very well in terms of
response and pitch. I showed it to my tech and he also really liked the way
it played. It also has a left hand Ab/Eb which I thought was pretty unusual
for an alto clarinet of that age. I really just bid on it on a lark and
never really thought I would own (or need) a usable alto clarinet.
Occasionally, you can get a good deal, on e-Bay, but there are risks. It
seems like, with all those alto clarinet New Years Eve gigs out there in the
Houston area, the phone ought to be ringing, but am still waiting. LOL
