Your requirement is going to cut out quite a few players! I've heard Benny
and Pete Fountain live, but otherwise some of my favorites, Irving Fazola,
Peanuts Hucko, Buddy deFranco, Edmund Hall, Artie Shaw were all a little
ahead of my time.

I understand that recording techniques make a difference, but Benny sounded
bright then, bright in live concert, and bright until the end, despite his
sessions with Reginald Kell to achieve an, ah, er, well, hmmm, "more
pleasant" tone.
