Do your instructors also say that when a finger is not in use, it flies
too far away from the keys?

If so, then perhaps you are coming down hard because your fingers must
travel farther in order to arrive on time.

Here's an exercise:

Play a long tone with all fingers down (whichever register you prefer).
Then _slowly_ and _gradually_ lift all fingers upwards while continuing
to play the long tone and while watching your fingers in a mirror.
Stop lifting your fingers **immediately** after the open G sounds
properly.

Then continue to play a melody or scale. Do all your fingers that
aren't down **remain** as close to their hole (or key) as they were when
you first sounded a proper open G?
