Gene,

Might I remind you that I was not the person who posted the
[legitimate, serious] question, nor was I the first one who responded to
it? I don't appreciate your pettiness in pointing to me specifically just
because we know you strenuously disagree with my beliefs (which is, of
course, your right). Ms. Buckman was the one who posed the question; why
is she not singled out for scorn as the person who took the discussion
"off topic"? [Note: I'm not saying she should be, as I think this topic is
much more interesting, and relevant, than the 40 posts on whether Mr. Pay
was or was not joking, but no one complains about those, and we're all
free to hit the "delete" button/key if we don't want to read a message...]

However, I think it is vitally important to point out that people do NOT
hate Americans, by and large. This is well established, but the myth
continues unabated to this day. And, unfortunately, people like
politicians (of all stripes) use this myth to justify doing Bad
Things(tm), so some of us work hard to continue to dispell it.

I realize you probably thought I was making a dig at President Bush with
my comments, but I wasn't, because these policies of double standards long
predate his administration; they date back at least to the immediate
post-WWII era. My comments were completely non-political, only reflecting
well-established facts that, sadly, most people outside the United States
understand far better than the average American.

Finally, you can save the aphorisms for someone else. For those of us who
dedicate ourselves to making the world a better place, for all its
inhabitants, the genteel prohibition on discussion of political issues is
nothing more than an end run on free speech, which I find abhorrent.

If Mark Charette asks me to cease posting, I will, but you have no right
to try to censor my thoughts; this list is not yours any more than it is
mine.
