While I was traveling this summer on my way to ClarinetFest my husband made
a rather astute remark. He said, "Why is it that so many foreigners express
such a distaste for American culture, but everywhere we go they are all
copying American culture? They wear our jeans, copy our regional food
preferences, drive our cars (and create their own after our models), watch
our movies and broadcast our TV programs (mostly in American English).

We went to the Hard Rock Cafe on July 4th looking for a burger and a beer
that tasted like it came from home and were deluged by questions of what the
staff at Hard Rock could do to make our visit more "American". "What do you
do when you celebrate the 4th? We told them about the backyard barbecues
and pool parties and general rowdiness with the culmination of fireworks
after dark. It was a gray, rainy day in Stockholm with very few customers
in the cafe and an outdoor celebration was out of the question. So they did
their darndest and gave us balloons, little U.S. flags, played the national
anthem and sang the words with a great Nordic accent to us and our beer and
burgers were without charge. It was a most unique 4th and we had a great
time.

We can't be all that bad, can we? And what would the rest of the world have
to complain about without us?
