The truth is that Europeans (which includes the UK whether they like it
or not) can spot an American a mile off. We (Americans, that is) are
not usually aware of how different everyday American behavior and
mannerisms can appear to people across the pond. Still, if Americans
are really despised for their perceived cultural eccentricities, I've
never understood why the French love Jerry Lewis so much. (A UK citizen
is likely to have a pithy answer.) :-)
