Subj: [kl] Re Tony Pay's comments

I think I know Tony Pay's sense of humor to recognize it a mile away.
And for those who took his comments about Americans to be either serious
or believed by him, or that his anger was aroused, then there is some
swampland in Florida that I would like to sell you. Tony uses what I
call, "Humor of the Extreme" which is to create comedy by contrasting a
ton of rock with an ounce of powder. But, if one is unprepared for that
kind of comedy, it can come as a shock.

When he and I were playing in San Diego together, we decided to take a
group picture with him, me, my wife, the orchestra manager (a woman
incidentally, but her gender is important to the story), and another
clarinetist, the woman-professor of clarinet at UCSD and who was playing
basset horn that evening. So we lined up to take the picture and no one
could get a realistic smile from us, or at least the photographer said so.

So I said, "When you are ready, let me know. I'll get this group to
smile but I can only do it once."

After fumbling around, the photographer said, "OK. I'm ready." At
which which point, I came out with an untypical obscene statement.
Everyone in the group started to laugh, and the photograph took the
picture. It was a very good example of "Humor of the Extreme." Tony's
remark about Americans was, too. For a pizza, I'll tell you how to get
everyone to smile when a picture is about to be taken.
