Annie, I spent a semester of my college years in Northamptonshire,
England, and as I recall the British are a bit "loose with their
language" at times. As a Mom with two children and a music teacher I
also object to Tony's choice of words. We all slip sometimes, but Tony
is one of our leaders on this group (one of our clarinet gurus) and I
have great respect for his work. I don't know for certain, but he may
have thought, as some of the British do, that we Americans are quite
liberal and "free" but this is not the truth and he needs to know that.
At the time I visited England, I was 19 and I worked in a community home
of education for troubled boys. These boys all had a stereotype of
American girls that we were all "California Beach Girls" who would sleep
around with anyone-they got this from TV of course. I think it's
important that we dispel this myth. Tony has taken a bit of guff about
his nationality, but it is my impression that this was only in response
to comments Tony has made about Americans. I don't think Tony hates
Americans-he might just enjoy the lively banter. However, he did get a
little too lively that time with his choice of words. I'm glad you
recognize the fact that Tony simply may have lost his temper that time
as we all do. That doesn't make it right, however. I just recently
received a speeding ticket (I was 20 miles over the limit-OUCH). I can
try to justify it all I want but it was not safe to do and even though
I've never received a speeding ticket before in my life, that doesn't
mean I wasn't out of line that time. Unfortunately I now have to pay
for it. OUCH again-$187.00 Christy Erickson
