Actually, one second in boiling water will soften a Legere reed by about
a quarter point. I usually buy 3.5s and immerse them for about 0.5 to
1.5 seconds depending on what altitude I am at (in Colorado, one needs
0.25 - 0.5 points softer than at sea level. I don't have the intonation
troubles that others have reported. The only issue I have is that
altissimo notes are harder to get than on canes, but a Spriggs ligature
seems to have fixed that (for me). In our very dry climate I got totally
fed up with cane reeds drying out WHILE I was blowing them!

Franco, probably you know this already, but:

(1) Don't prolong the immersion in boiling water. 5 seconds is a long
immersion.

(2) Your reed will recover some of its stiffness during the 24 hours
after you imerse it.

Cheers,
Bill
