It would seem, then, that the "search for definitions" project now underway on
this list would be best conducted through a comparative analysis of the tone
quality produced by great clarinetists of the past who left recorded works,
when each played the same pieces of music.

(And the analysis should, if I interpret Tony Pay's comments correctly, sample
the variation of tone quality in different passages in the work.)

I know that such a discussion would be of much greater interest to me than an
abstract discussion of tone-color adjectives--although it would almost
certainly use such adjectives.

Since I am a very raw amateur, I am very interested in learning, not only what
tone the best performers produce and how, but why, and in what context.
