I agree Bill. I listened to Harold Wright this morning (Boston Recordings).
His tone brightens considerably in the upper clarion. Then again, in the
chalumeau, he doesn't sound as "dark" as Karl Leister (I compared their two
performances of the Brahms Quintet). Wright sounds slightly more
transparent, Leister somewhat more translucent. The two performances are
stunning, and I could easily listen to both without preference (okay, I like
the American).
