I propose to the list that we end this debate by using the power of this
LIST and the advantage of the Internet to define these terms.

I propose that this listserve embark on a noble cause AS A GROUP.

1) We list ALL of the terms we can possibly think of to describe the
sound of the clarinet

2) define them over time by consensus.

3) Post the consolidated results to the archives as well as post it round
the country.

The process would take as long as it needs to . . .We would strive to set
aside our preconceived notions, or our entitlement to them. All ideas are
welcome from everyone (students, professionals, teachers, critics, industry,
manufacturers) Anonymity if desired. Theprocess of distilling the results
would include periodic postings the list can examine. Knowing that any
process by committee is subject to considerable revision, I suggest we all
agree to be willing to live with
the results and perhaps to modify our own thinking (which I believe will
happen through this process anyway).
