Subj: [kl] Question about German notation
Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 13:37:12 -0500

I apologize for this off-topic question, but my usually excellent Google skills
failed me on this one.

This weekend, I purchased a piano reduction of Beethoven's opus 84, the
incidental music from Egmont, the overture to which remains one of my favorite
pieces of music of any kind. The piano reduction includes numerous cues as to
which instrument would actually be playing the part in the orchestration. This
is helpful information, since I can adjust the coloring of my playing
accordingly. The cues are in German: "Klar.", "Fag.", etc.

However, one abbreviation has me stumped. Some of the uppermost parts are
labelled "Hbl.", and I cannot figure out what that is. From the range, I'm
guessing it is either Eb clarinet or piccolo, but I haven't been able to find
any glossary or legend on the web to confirm this.

Any takers?
