If I may presume the intent of Mr. Aten's suggestion, he is not
addressing the question you state, but rather that you are more likely to
gauge your true unfavoured intonation of each note if you play without the
visual feedback of the tuning needle, which could possibly influence your
adjusting of the pitch.
As to your stated question, I would submit that there is no such
thing as "the intrinsic pitch of the instrument", any more than "the
intrinsic speed of a baseball" unless someone picks it up and throws it.
