I quite believe it.
I have always preferred the sound and response of a good crystal m/p but in
over 40 years playing [and buying] them I have found only two, both of which
eventually broke so I have given up trying to find another. I have found them
to be much more inconsistent than hard rubber m/p's. [The old crystals I gave
to a list member.]
I think Vandoren once [1960's?] marketed one under Fountain's name...actually
a 2RV, very similar to the 5RV. I latter years he has recommended a Vandoren
and now I think Leblanc are making a Pete Fountain model.
Apart from what marketing agents tell us, what do your ears tell you he is
using? Certainly a softish reed and, to my ear, a close lay, something like
5RV.
I did meet him once in N.O. but was too overawed to ask!
I know from past posts there are other keen Fountain fans on this list and
I'm sure someone will know.
