Subj: [kl] Wacky reed problem solved
Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 06:26:42 -0500

For those of you who remember my student's "reed closing up" problem, we've
found the explanation.

I found out that she's been storing her reeds alternately in the metal
ReedGard holder and a La Voz plastic holder. She "travels" with the metal
one, but stores her extra reeds in the plastic holder as she cycles through
them after adjustments and so forth.

The plastic holder has a bulge under the vamp of the reeds on both sides! I
could feel it when she brought the holder and I inserted a reed in each
space. (Bad mold, probably.) When she puts the reeds in the holder, the
clamp pressed down on top and warped the reeds as they dried.

To be scientific, I adjusted the plastic holder with a large hammer, a
blowtorch, and one stick of dynamite, and the problem disappeared.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, by the way.
