invites you to

BEHIND THE LINES

Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at 7:30 pm
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall
Benaroya Hall, Seattle

Meet Quake's members backstage following the performance.

Behind the Lines focuses on music written during or about war - a timely=20
and important theme, particularly when presented on the day after Veteran's=
=20
Day. The program will open with a new multi-media work by Quake and local=20
artist John Pai entitled 9066, which addresses Executive Order #9066=20
ordering the internment of Americans of Japanese descent during World War=20
II. Visual art and speech will combine with Noh music, improvisation,=20
popular and patriotic American music, and jazz for a powerful experience,=20
creating and re-creating impressions and emotions related to the internment=
=20
of Japanese Americans. The first half will also include Franz Liszt's=20
Fun=E9railles and selections of music by Glenn Miller. On the second half=20
will be Olivier Messiaen's monumental Quartet for the End of Time.=20
Punctuating the program will be calls of traditional fife and drum music=20
used during the Revolutionary War.

Quake's second season at Benaroya Hall will continue with Concerts on=20
February 10 and May 5. Seattle-based Quake includes current and former=20
members of such divergent groups as the Kronos Quartet, Metropolitan Opera,=
=20
Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the "Jazz Talk" Octet, the
University of Washington faculty, and the rock band Relative Sight.
Hailed in the Tacoma Reporter for "...creating entirely new and
amazing performance experiences," Quake continues to expand the mind of
audiences with engaging, multi-media events.

Quake's Members:

Meade Crane - piano, Ella Marie Gray - violin, Walter Gray - cello, Don=20
Immel -
trombone, Sean Osborn - clarinet, Susan Telford - flute, and Rob Tucker -
