Well, it is mostly the intonation. From top to bottom it is dead
center. I played the Mozart Requiem on 9/11 and the other basset
hornist said, "Listen to how well in tune we are."

The other thing about my basset horn is that it is so beautiful. I have
it in Rosewood with gold plated keys. Mothers throw their daughters at
me. A minimum of 7 proposals of marriage occur at every gig.

From the viewpoint of sound, I don't think that gold and rosewood make
a damn bit of difference, but when I play something that looks
beautiful, I play better. I even play better when I have my nails
manicured, no kidding. It's all aesthetics.

Steve has a lot of work, so if you want one in time for the 2006
commemoration, order it now, and pay for it now. If the price goes up
during the interim, you have him by the short hairs (I think). And don't
let him talk you into the wide bore instrument. He is neurotic on that
matter so I stopped listening to him on that matter.

Anyone who would buy a wide bored basset horn may not marry my daughter!!
