Hello fellow clarinetists

I am a clarinet student at Western Illinois University. For a music
business, class project, I am working on completing a career project
focusing on the role and profession of an orchestral musician.
It is my hope that some of you may be willing to answer a few questions
regarding the profession, so that I may include your insights, warnings, and
words of wisdom in my presentation and final report.
In presenting these questions to the list, I am hoping to gain insight from
a variety of professionals and/or non-professionals, given that this list
contains a diverse group of individuals. The questions may also lead to
interesting conversation throughout the list members.
If you would like to contact me privately with your answers, any questions
or comments, please feel free to email me directly.

Thank you for all of your time and consideration.

In your opinion, what is the single most important “thing” you can do (or
did) to prepare yourself in becoming a professional musician and/or
specifically orchestral performer?
Considering education, what level of degree do you feel is necessary to
attain in order to begin seriously auditioning and competing for orchestra
jobs?
Conservatory or University?
The world of music is often associated with political maneuvering. How
important is the “who you know” factor?
There are thousands of players capable of performing in an orchestral
position, yet there are so few positions available. How do you separate
yourself from those other fifty players who are auditioning for that one
spot and convince the judges that you are the right person for the job?
Perhaps you have won a position, yet it does not exactly pay the bills. How
else do you financially support yourself?
Are there any professional organizations, which you feel are beneficial to
join? (Ie. ASOL)
Are there any journals or magazines, which you recommend subscribing to?
