Harold Wright told me that "vibrato should be used only if you want to show
movement or intensity on a note" but not to be used constantly. - the
clarinet being so rich in overtones, the beauty and expressiveness of sound
is more intense then in instruments that overblow an octave. There is an
interesting section in the Carol Kycia book on Bonade (pp71-72) where he
speaks of vibrato as being "natural". "It only comes up in performance when
I am really into the music" He said he could not and would not teach it.
