Jim Pyne has hundreds of samples; these were representative.
Benade has samples of modern vs. not so modern instruments in "Fundamentals
of Musical Acoustics" showing cutoff frequencies. There are also a number of
_very_ interesting papers in the Musical Acoustics Research Library
(http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/marl/).
Before people go off into speculation of what does what in a musical
instrument (or musical "system") it might be a wise idea to peruse some of
the papers available in those archives and read some of the prior art on
musical acoustics (including "The Psychology of Music" by Deutsch). It's
worthwhile, even if halfway through you need to crack open a few math books.
Keeps you from going down the same blind alleys former researchers have
already traveled, and might open a few eyes into what it takes to perform
some valid experiments.
