You're probably right; but to clarinet players, it might have been the
funniest scene in the episode. Can you imagine an obsessive-compulsive
trying to choose a reed?! First of all, choosing one would mess up the
arrangement of the ones left in the box. And then there's the ancient joke,
which Monk would bring to life and then some:

Q: How many clarinet players does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Only one, but he'll have to go through a whole box of bulbs to find just
the right one.
