Bill,
Two three things that may be of help.
1 be sure the batteries are good. Low batteries will sometimes cause what
you describe.
2 some tuners have the ability to display at different speeds. Be sure to
set yours on the slowest response speed, if this is the case
3 try using one of the tuner mics that clip on the instrument. I clip mine
on the bell. They cost about $12. It cuts out the background noise issue
