My guess, from watching him play at his wife's grave in the episode I saw,
was that he may actually have played clarinet in junior high or high school
many years ago, but is far from current on the instrument, and may not have
been particularly good THEN. However, I think any deficiency in his
clarinet playing can be excused, since he does show considerable talent as
an ACTOR.
