In my mopinion, your question gets right to the heart of music.

You must *listen* to what you're doing, and you must decide what you
feel as you listen --- just as you must listen in order to choose an
instrument. Browsing through a catalog is not the way to decide.

There are a few situations where finger excercises help, and I'm not
knocking fantasy, but "air practice"..... isn't.
