My nephew, the KUSC program host, sent me his new edition of the K.464 A
Major string quartet and said he thought it would sound good as a clarinet
quartet, so I've been working on and off to make the necessary changes
(octave transpositions mainly for the two violins and the cello).

First of all, starting from the premise that a little apoplexy never hurt
any purist zealot (however ill-conceived that might be), I transposed it to
Bb because I didn't want to play a piece in five sharps. Not to worry, if
my transcription is played by four A clarinets all will be forgiven, except
for the blowing vs. bowing differences, which as it turns out are considerable.

Anyway, our clarinet quartet played if through for the first time last
Saturday and I'm rather disappointed to admit that it doesn't work very
well. As soon as I fix up all of the mid-measure repeats so that it plays
back correctly, I'll put it on my Web page so you can listen to the MIDI
files (and play along if you have Finale 2003).
