Subj: [kl] Jurg Baur "Sechs Bagatellen" - Trills question
Date: Fri, 1 Nov 2002 16:08:44 -0500

Okay. Dr. Johnston liked my "Abyss of the Birds" on my last recital and
suggested that I try the Jurg Baur "Sechs Bagatellen" for solo clarinet (or
Bass Clarinet). I agreed and now I have a question about the trills.

I prepared the solo for lessons assuming a whole-step above unless otherwise
mentioned (i.e. second movement, third measure from the end Mr. Baur adds a
natural sign to make the trill a half-step [B to c1]). In his preparation
years ago, with Dr. Heim, Dr. Johnston had come up with something different.

Has anyone else prepared this piece and what did you decide upon for the
trills? Are there any notes on this piece concerning trills and/or any
"rules of thumb" that I am missing here in order to do other than a step
above [This piece is without any key signatures or clearly delineated
scales.]

Any of you recording ladies and gentleman, what would you do if you were to
record the piece?

Thanks in Advance,

Robert Moody

P.S. My second Doctoral recital is November 24th, 2002 in Goodson Recital
Hall on the Shenandoah University campus in Winchester, Virginia. The
recital is at 7:00 PM and is free. The program includes the Finzi
"Concerto", Baur "Sechs Bagatellen", Busoni "Concertino" and the Mozart
"Quintet" for Clarinet and String Quartet. Any able to come are definitely
invited and I would look forward to meeting you afterwards.
