In addition to what's been offered already, I concur that renting for 3
months is an excellent idea. Many stores will credit the first 3
months towards your purchase.

You should DEFINITELY avoid the $100-$200 instruments, regardless
whether you look at them on eBay or elsewhere. The keys on these
cheapies are often pot metal and bend, you'll have to spend several
hundred dollars on new pads & corks and adjustments on a used cheapie
from electronic auction, and so forth.

A plastic student clarinet in the $350-$450 range, such as Yamaha
YCL-20, is a good starting place.

The Internet addresses that someone else has already posted are reliable
dealers who, while they want to make a profit, will not outright cheat
or defraud you. They will save you some money, and frequently they know
more about instruments than the minimum-wage counter clerks at some
music stores. But local stores can provide you with better
after-the-sale service --- including references for teachers.

Cheers,
Bill
