I would suggest you visit Anaheim Band Instruments. http://www.abimusic.com/

I have been in there a couple of times and they seem to have a good
selection and reasonable prices. Someone who lives closer may have some
other ideas.

In the price range you have mentioned ($300), you would be looking at a
quality student instrument like a Buffet B-12 in a new instrument. You may
also be able to find a used intermediate instrument.

I know that birthday is coming up, but it might not hurt to rent something
for a couple of months so she can find out if she is serious.
