Reverse half-holing
We make it easier for ourselves to go into the higher register, such as high
D and E,by uncovering or half-holing to the first finger left hand hole.
For instance when your try to play high D (two lines above the staff) you
uncover the first hole of the left hand.

If you wish to slur down from the high D to A below (one line above the
staff) one could, whilst still supporting the high D, cover the open hole
and slur down to A, or any other note within that range.
There is a famous solo in Beethoveen's fourth Symphony that has a slur like
that which is achieved more easily by first closing the open hole for the
first finger of the left hand and then slur down to A.
