Just food for thought . . .

My main instrument needed some work done to it and I had to play on my
back-up instrument. Both instruments are Buffets and both are pretty
old. However, when I played on my back-up instrument, my sound wasn't
as "open" and big as on my primary instrument. Probably with time I
would have done some things to get the same sound I was looking for but
I was very when I was able to finally go back to my primary instrument.

I think the "set-up" is important. Just like we look for the right
mouthpiece/reed/ligature combination, we need to look for the "right"
instrument that we can play on. I suppose we can basically sound the
same on any instrument (some of my younger students are amazed at the
good sounds I can bring out on their horrible little plastic student
instruments) but will it be the sound that "we" desire?
