Having just been through the "dirty hole" problem myself, I wonder if
what looks like ragged edges are actually fibers and gunk clinging to
the edges of the hole, not bad woodworking?

Removing the keys (Corragio!) after obtaining a screwdriver and spring
hook ($10 + s&h from bw&ww) would tell you the answer.
