Other list members' objections notwithstanding, there's at least one
situation where that assertion is demonstrably true: The farther the
clarinet is removed from proximity with the clarinet player's mouth, the
worse the clarinet will sound next time it's played. The theory of harmonic
resonance enters into this equation, too: The more time elapses with the
clarinet remaining at a distance from the clarinetist's mouth, the more
pronounced this effect becomes.

Okay, I'm being facetious, but in the service of the point that the one
factor overwhelming all the others in importance is the amount of time we
spend (or not) on alert, thoughtful practicing.

I think I'll work on banshee noises today. ;-)
