It is been asserted on this list that the impact of any particular factor on a
player's sound is inversely proportional to the distance of that factor from
the player's mouth. Thus, in decreasing order of importance: embouchure, reed,
mouthpiece, ligature, barrel, instrument.

I find this to be both intuitively satisfying and empirically true (for my
small sample).
