Subj: [kl] More on oils

The recent subject of oils has left me with a puzzlement.
I know there are several of you on this list that do woodworking and
refinishing and some do instrument restoration and repairs that may be
able inform me.

I know some oils are used as a finish on furniture and for the
protection of woods that are subject to sun, wind, and rain. Some oils
seem to penetrate more than others and some oils fill wood pores and
leave a hard dry skin on the outside (such as the oil I use on the
outside of my log home). Some oils never leave this dry outer surface
they just evaporate over time.

Question: are there oils that are non-toxic that would fill the wood
pores that show up in in the bore of older clarinets without leaving a
hard residue that would not have the effect of diminishing the bore size
but rather leave the bore smooth as it probably was when new?

Am I wasting my time even think about this?
